I just put a 460 with a c-6 auto trans into my 92 Bronco. The starter is the issue. When I put it in, it will turn just fine. After 2 or 3 starts, it goes out of alignment. I have tightend the spacer plate.. loosened the starter and reset it to make sure it was properly seated. 2 or 3 starters and it will miss again.. not slowly, it goes from all to non...
Everytime I take it out an put it back it is fine. The flywheel is new, and the starter is new. I had a warranty so I replaced the new with another new to ensure the starter was not defective.
the starter you bought was for an automatic correct? are the bolts loose when you have this issue? Perhaps the flexplate is wrong? what did you get the motor/trans out of?
There was never an option to differentiate auto or man starter. All bolts are tight. That was the first thing I checked to be sure it was seating correctly. Motor is out of 82 E350, Trans is C6 out of f250, year unknown.
Flywheel is new and checked for warping.
so to ask some questions, the starter your using has a cover over the Bendix arm or it has a solenoid on the starter. when it doesn't try to start the starter isn't engaging in the flywheel at all. do you hear the starter spin or not. did you put any oil on the starter shaft or is there any oil leaking in the bell housing area.
I replaced the starter. While I was waiting for the new starter to come in, I changed a valve cover gasket that had a leak (nicked it putting it in) so I had all the drivers side spark plug wires disconnected from the plugs. Put in new starter, she starts with no problem. Obviously running rough. Stalls. Starts and stall 5 more time before I remove my head from my *** and 4 plug wires are hanging. Plug all wires in, starter skips and grind first start.. checked my timing to 5 degrees past TDC on cylinder 1.
Now I am really confused...
Can my starter not handle my compression? Is my timing FUBAR?

Reason: after thought
i just re-read your post that your running a 460. that timing seems low though still. are you sure about the firing order? are you carbed or efi with that motor?
It is carbed. Double checked the firing order. I am going to recheck my timing. I think I may have retarded it instead of advancing... would that still do it?
no that shouldn't make any difference. make sure the shaft is clean on the starter and no oil is on it. make sure your battery cable ends are clean and tight. only other suggestion is see if you can put a new style starter that has the solenoid on it. it helps push the bendix in better than the older style.
I do see that the newer starters are different between manual and auto but that is for the truck its originally from. what year truck did your 460 come out of. according to the parts book that started in 1992. before then it didn't matter.
Mine is from a 82-82 E350. The engine is D9TE. The trans has a 14 stamped on the belly of it. I saw the 250 it came out of but that doesnt mean it was original. All new wiring, on the motor... taking old wiring out, none of old wiring is run to new system.,
