well I just bought my first ford highboy. this is a 390 that has been turned into a 410
It is a 2/3 complete restoration the guy lost interest in. my main problem at the moment is the starter is not far enough away from the flywheel so it can't back off far enough and its chewing up my starter teeth and starting to mess up the flywheel/flexplate teeth. has a c6 auto truck is a 1976 no idea on year of engine or trans. engine probably has no more then half hour of run time since rebuild. I am try trying to get ahold of the PO to ask him if he made sure to get the 428 flywheel since I read there externally balanced. and yes the block plate is also installed. its a brand new napa starter that I took out and had them test and it is good. anybody had this happen before?
Is there a manual shift vr auto starter. Might be wrong but thought there was only one 3 bolt FE starter.
John
Now that I look at the NAPA site and see no reference to auto/man trans, I think you are right. Does the shim method sound right to you or do you think it's possibly a flywheel issue?
If the combination is so close that the pinion can't back out of engagement with the flywheel teeth when the starter switch is released something is way wrong. Wrong starter in the box, wrong part number, wrong flywheel or something along those lines.
As for the flywheel, remember that if the 410 was internally balanced when it was built the flywheel doesn't need to be external balance type. My crankshaft is a lot bigger stroke than 3.98, and I use a standard flywheel.
I think it was a faulty starter and or ignition switch. I put a 3rd starter in and changed out the ignition switch because it didnt feel like it was kicking the key back all the way to the run position with the internal springs. and so far so good. now i just need to figure out why its overheating and hope I can stop my rear main leaking with some seallube or something. and as far as whats correct parts and stuff I cant say because i bought it as a incomplete project. gonna try and find out from the PO everything though. gotta get exhuast on it soon though neighbors are starting to
The ign switch was not the problem, it was either on or off. Sounds like your rear main is leaking at the intake or valve covers and at the crank.
Are you driving the truck or ideling it. These trucks will not sit and idle very long without overheating, they must have air moving through the radiator to stay cool. With the huge open frontal area that isn't a problem on the road.
