I have a 79 ford f150 with a 302. Had to replace my starter. It started fine when I first put it on and now it whines and is grinding on my flywheel. Any ideas on what is wrong.
There IS a difference between the auto and manual transmission starters. One has a longer nose, but for the life of me I can't remember which is which. Old age SUCKS!!
He didn't mean "what transmission do you have so I can go figure this out for you," he meant "make sure the starter the parts store is giving you matches your actual transmission." In other words, you need to check with the parts store and ask them if the starter they've been giving you is indeed for an automatic transmission.

Ha hahaha.... not to be a bunghole, but.....
Exact-a-mundo!! Thank you, kind sir, for clarifying my post....
Auto transmission for the 289 / 302 starter has a nose about 3/8" longer than the one for a standard transmission. I have a couple of each in my stash and have tried the wrong one if i never checked it close before installing . A standard one to an auto trany may start a few times until it damages the flywheel teeth , then start missing. The auto one in a standard set up will jam up most of the time and damage the flywheel and starter gear most of the time. Been there and done that more than once , some of us just never learn from our mistakes .__
Yea I double checked and made sure it was the right starter... It looks like the tooth spacing on my starter is bigger than the tooth ratio on my flywheel.

If the tooth spacing is different then they sold you the wrong starter or they replaced the drive gear with the wrong one. Do you still have the old one or was it a core trade in ? Anytime they ask for a core trade on a part, i make them open up the box the new one is in so i can see it's the right one. I would take it back and tell them to get the right one.
