Yes, you can, but its not a simple affair. You can convert your high level signal coming out of the head unit to low level (RCA) then you'll need to wire in some RCA's or buy a harness. Only problem with this is that all of your other channels will be RCA now, so you'll need to amp the rest of the speakers as well.
Any reason you dont want to just buy a line out converter and run that to your sub? Thats a much more traditional way of doing it...
Well, the sub can take line level outputs as well, that's probably simplest. Was just hoping the stock stereo has RCA preouts...was just guessing that'd be cleaner? Not sure where I should tap into the line level outputs - maybe the rear speakers are easiest and just run that wire from the back to the front seats under the floor trim instead of digging into the dash?
High level is super clean in this truck, just grab the high level output for the rear speaker from the speaker wires in the B pillar. Its right next to the front seats. Run those to your subs and you're good to go. You dont need a super clean signal for bass anyways...but the high level in these has been very impressive.
Do you have the 8" sync 3? If so everything is already there for a sub. The harness is in the rear drivers side panel. Use forscan to select subwoofer on and you have all the wires you need. You can even configure it for 4v pre out if you want just do it from forscan.
I have 8" sync 3, but was under the impression the base stereo w/ that wasn't sony and didn't have subwoofer connector. When I removed the ugly carpet thing from my back wall and replaced it with sound deadening material I did find a couple unused connectors. I assumed at least 1 was for sliding rear window (which I don't have). Maybe the other is the sub. Its more toward passenger side though. I didn't see any connectors behind the drivers side rear corner..just the seat belt. I could certainly have missed it though.
The connector he's talking about is for a Sony system...I did not have one run in mine. I guess you can check and see, but since you are mounting these under your seats I dont think you really gain any ease by going all the way to the back wall.
Thanks, I thought I'd gleaned that from other stereo posts but wasn't sure. Should be great to add a little bass to this system. Might do the speakers some day, too.
Does anyone make an adapter that connects to the back of a Sony headunit and terminates in RCA females? You could use that once you drop the outputs to line level. Doesn’t make sense for this application, but I’m thinking for a future project. I’d like to get the line levels to the back as clean as possible then run through a crossover and multichannel amps...rewire the speakers. Yeah, some effort in wiring, but that headunit is not going to provide what I’m looking for.
I don't need or expect huge sound, just want a bit more basa and don't want to lose room behind my supercrew rear seat. Thanks
The stock head unit does not have RCA outputs.
If you dont`t care about SYNC 3, the best thing for you to do is to just replace the stock head unit with a DD from one of the major players like Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, or Sony and call it a day.
