Ok so here goes , 1998 ranger 4.0 208k miles , i did what they said couldnt be done , i put a 97 engine in the 98 , to do this all the eletrical was reused off the old engine including intake with injectors and motor mounts , the rest is exactly the same . Now the check engine light was lit before the engine swap but i gave it no attention as the motor was low on comoression and tired. Now my issue
i have 5 codes
P0340 cam sensor
p0135 02 sensor
p0141 o2 sensor
p0155 o2 sensor
p1409 egr solenoid
i replaced the cam sensor , reset codes no change , i checked voltage at egr solenoid 0 on one side .5 on the other , also traced wires back to computer and checked at the plug for computer , same readings. When i erase the codes and rescan they come back almost instantly. Im lost .
at this point im thinking PCM but i want opinions from yall
when i start the engine runs rough for a few seconds then runs great , little hesitation in higher gears with a load but compared to the old motor its a huge improvement.
Im grabbing a better scan tool this weekend , all i have is one that reads codes. As for the sensors everything woth exception to the crank sensor , coolant sensor and oil pressure sensor was transferred. Its inportant to note as well that the truck this motor came out of i did drive home and there were no engine lights on at that time.
Consider the inexpensive but powerful ELM scan tool & running FORScan diagnostic software that's tweaked for Fords, on the viewing device of your choice as discussed here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-scantool.html, as it can query all of the vehicle computer/controllers & put up our choice of live sensor feeds, in several formats of our choice on the dash board & that info can help focus a trouble shoot.
Sounds like the donor vehicle engine with only 50K miles on it might have some good substitute sensors to try in place of the suspect ones with 200K miles on them. Let us know what you find.
So they say start simple and work to complicated .... shouldve listened . Rockledge was half right , the fuse was fine , started chasing wires this morning and took the main engine harness connector apart for the 5th time ..... what do ya know , a bent pin ... 5 mins later and now the truck runs pissah!!! Thanks for the help guys .
