Adjusting OEM steering box.

Adjusting OEM steering box.
To get play out of the steering wheel, what is the maximum the screw can be turned/adjusted?
EDIT: 8/12/18
I adjusted it and plan to drive it for awhile longer, but I believe the box is on its last legs.
In the mean time, 1/4 turn, 1/3 turn 1/2 turn, 2/3 turn, 3/4 turn...well you get the picture...
How far is too far?

No more than ~1/8 a turn at a time before testing. Although, if you are adjusting the box, start thinking about a replacement.
The Blue Top steering gears are said to be as good a quality as Red Head, but half the price.

You can take your chances with a China bomb like I had to, they come with a lifetime warranty and can be had in a quick amount of time when needed.

How many miles. 1/8th turn is great advice. Start there. Be careful to index the center and not the jam. If your not getting as much relief after 1/8th........you can go slightly less, but after that your looking at broken teeth and bones when it siezes. Time and age would dictate complete replacement. This is an inherent wear item and if not done correctly, folks in the left lane will suffer.

I adjusted mine just a hair about a year ago...made it better, but now it’s about as bad as it was before I adjusted it. Basically I need a steering box, but trying to wait until fall so I don’t have to put it on when it’s 95 degrees with 95% humidity.
Granted, I’m running 305/70/16 tires on stock wheels, so that doesn’t help, but I’ve still got more play than I should.
