Half way through a trip home, engine light comes on 500 miles from home and no dealers are open. Truck operating normally, engine temps and power and nothing out of place. Pulled into an oreilly to pull code? P20EE which they had no clue.
Grabbed a hotel in hopes code will clear and I don’t want to go into limp mode at night.
Any clues as to what this could be? Google turns up a variety of possibilities mostly related to Def or emissions. Def tank is full
Saw that article, as well as others saying it could be many different things.
All fill ups are questionable, but I did fill up when I was half a tank low on the interstate at a well used looking truck stop with lots of traffic. Who knows.
Most articles talk about DEF and Nox sensors.
I guess the prudent thing to do is drive during daylight hours and hope she doesn’t go into limp mode.
Shoukd i I have Oreillys clear code or continue down road?
Don't clear the code. When you clear trouble codes, it also erases the history and freeze frame data. These are important data points when it comes to diagnostics. If your truck had a momentary glitch, there is no way for a technician to understand what was going on when the code triggered. And, since freeze frame data tells what all the sensors were reading at the moment the computer set the code, a code such as yours that could have multiple triggers, makes it very difficult to determine where to look for the problem. You are also likely to be sent home without a fix if you bring the truck to the dealer without an active MIL since they have very little to work with.
Clearing codes doesn't fix the problem. The only thing clearing trouble codes does is to turn off the malfunction indicator light (MIL). That just means if that same problem or another code comes up, you get the MIL again and can again scan the system to see if it's the same or a different code.
FYI, day 3 and 1,000 miles later or so, light went away. I am still going to take to dealer this morning to have them pull codes and note the issue during warranty etc. WEIRD!
Not so weird...once had my DEF gauge not register 5 gal of DEF for several days. Knew the tank was ok, just the gauge didn't register correctly. One morning startedup and the gauge read correctly. Didn't have the MIL light tho....
Understand your concern but with modern oil burners the occasional codes are just something to deal with--most will self clear after so many starts. As pointed out above do not erase them--if it is a issue it needs to be visible to the tech at the dealership.
