Check Engine Lite On/off On/off

Hey ,
I Have 93 Aerostar 3.0 ,and Today I Had Left Home To Go See A Job I'll Be Starting On Mon. And Here Its Poor'n Down Raining And 5 Miles Down The Road My Check Engine Lite Comes On ? So My 1st Thought Was Go Back Home So As I Did I Noticed Lite Would Go On/off Several Times .. And Usually The Only Lite That Comes On Is My Oil Lite ,about Every 1500 Miles She Needs 1 Qrt ... Any Advice As To Were To Go From Here Would Be Gr8 ,the Shops Charge So Much These Days Just To Look At Car ,the Dealer In My Area Is Over 100.00 Hr. ...
Was Kinda Thinking Maybe The Heavy Rain Was Why Lite Was Coming On , I Need To Go See Job Today, And Dont Want To Use My 85 Gt 5.0 Cause That S Not Running So Good Lately... Tia Lh61

Hi Longhair:

Welcome to our FTE forum.

When the light goes on like that, there must be a code stored on the computer. For a '93, you can get the code without a code reader, just do a search on it, get the code and tell us what it is. We'll go from there. Without the code, it's impossible to tell what is wrong just by your description.

Hi Longhair:

Here's how, courtesy of 93nighthawk

It's really easy and should only take a few minutes of your time.

217 is "PCM detected coil 3 primary circuit failure." from
Ford OBDI 3# codes click

you must have a late '93 3L with the non distributor electronic EDIS spark system to have 3 digit codes?
or do you have a distributor mounted at top rear of engine?

if you have the EDIS system?

it's one of 2
1 corroded primary connections on coil pack
clean the connectors of the wiring harness plug plus the corresponding connections on the coil pack and the plug wires connection to the coil pack located on top rear of engine...use a silicone dielectric ignition grease, light coating, on the electrical connections
2. failed coil pack

disconnect the neg. batt. lead for 10 minutes after the repair to clean the ECU memory of codes and faults.....
drive and see if problem gone.....
if still having problem, then replace coil pack

Ford does not use code 317
click for codes

Hi Longhair:

I'm sorry but you'll need to go through it all again. You should have only 3-digit codes.

Read the post by 93nighthawk again for a detailed description of how the codes were sent. I think they are sent in two different groups and also repeated once.

117 is the code for Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor, the one with two wires on it, not the one with a single wire.

96_4wdr:

I have a '93 3.0L with a distributor and I get 3-digit codes. I think only very old Aerostars (late 80s) have 2-digit codes.

copper,
most code lists show 2 digit OBD codes for '93 Aeros, there must be a model year change to later 3 digit ECU in '93 with upgraded features
the 217 can not apply to an older distributor 3L, no coil pack
my 93 Ford service cd shows both distributor and EDIS 3L's, what fun

Longhair,
glad you joined the gang with this good mystery
please pull codes again
both K.ey O.n E.ngine O.ff KOEO and K.ey O.n E.ngine R.unning KOER codes.

the engine coolant temp. sensor is located above the water pump and on the passenger side of the water hose outlet to radiator...often the 2 wire connectors to these becomes corroded and loose

Key On Engine Off

With pen and paper in hand, turn the ignition to the "on" position, but do not start the car. The "check engine" light will blink very quickly for about a second and then shut off. You will hear the cooling fan turn on and then off as well as the fuel pump. After this, the codes will start being emitted from the "check engine" light. The codes are displayed in pulses in sets of 3. For instance, a code 114 would show as follows:

Flash *1 second pause* Flash *1 second pause* Flash Flash Flash Flash

(Note to 1989 - 1991 SHO owners: Your codes will display the same way, but are two digits rather than three)

After the computer has displayed all the codes, it will repeat them all again. After that, there will be a single flash and then the computer will start displaying the stored codes. The stored codes are problems that the car has noticed in the past, but didn't necessarily notice when testing itself. The codes will be displayed in the same way as the first set.

here it is said to have 3 digits, and mine zips out 3 in seqounce then last one is 4 , HEY i cant do anymore test today cause 1 its poor'n out ,im north a CHICAGO ,rain most a day i'll follow up in morrning thanks u guys for your help so far ,cause i need to learn how to test my 85 stang gt 5.0 cause it run weird at times

longhair,
do you have an auto parts store within reasonable driving distance?

if so, give them a call....many will pull codes with commercial reader for free

pick up a new E.ngine C.oolant T.emp sensor at same time
Niehoff part #TS25661
if wire loom connector failed get
PS72691 wire pigtail connector also
fill the connector full of silicone dielectric grease when you put it back together....keeps out all the garbage, antifreeze, road goop etc

hey longhair,
i know those Chicago thunderstorms that last all day....hair stands on end from electricity and water pours out of sky like cow pissing on flat rock

No need to explain my problem, it's the same problem longhair had. Only difference is that when I turn the key to the ON position the check engine just stays lit and does not flash. My guess is I need to do the jumper thing to get the flash going?
