I can't get the rear center section to seal up against the axle housing on a ford 9". I've tried atv silicone, I've tried atv with a gasket, my latest attempt is a gasket with edelbrocks gasgasinch. What is the best way to stop the drops? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thx.
I have used black permatex with good results. You have to follow the directions but mostly, let it cure before adding any fluid.
Permatex does make a differential specific sealer if you cant get other solutions to work. Make sure the surfaces are free from bures and really clean before putting things back together.
Good luck
This carrier has dripped ever since I've owned it, I'm tired of the drops on the floor for sure. I can see the oil seeping out from behind the nuts around the studs, I think these copper crush washers might do the trick, if not I'll try the permatex. Thx for the suggestion.
You definitely want the copper washers. I'd be careful using sealants on the flange, the pumpkin can be VERY hard to get back off if you use something really sticky.
I have seen and repaired more than one 9 inch housing that has had hairline cracks in the flange that mates with the differential. It is frustrating since there is no amount of sealant or washers that will stop the dripping if this is the case.
Just like any other crack in metal...drill out a hole at each end of the crack before welding it up. On the housings that I repaired I had them removed and on the bench. I guess they could be done while installed but care must be taken to ensure that all the grease/oil has been thoroughly cleaned out of the crack. tinman's fix is a good temporary solution.
The best I can tell it's seeping just around the bottom 4 studs. The axle housing is new the carrier is from an older 9", with only maybe 15000 miles on it. All I did was put a posi carrier to go with the new 31 spline axles. I'm really hoping the washers will do the trick.
