Back in May I went (flew) to Florida for 10 days, leaving the Ex parked in the driveway. Before I left, I had no issues with it. When I got back, I drove it less than 150 miles and all forward gears started slipping really bad. It'll go forward, and very slowly (extremely light touch on the go pedal) and get up to speed. Hills are a problem.
Got it home and parked it, ironically or not, reverse seems fine. So, I'm going to either pull the trans and get it rebuilt, or buy one and swap it. With 215k on it, I'm considering swapping the transfer case as well. It still works, but, there's and annoying clanging sound coming from the transfer case when going into gear, that's been there for a couple years.
I feel you Mav. I had a shop change the transfer case oil a month or so ago and it was REALLY low and there were metal filings on the magnetic plug. Ominous sign....
Trans is done, surprised it moves forward at all and should stop doing so rather quickly.
the clang is most likely the driveshaft slip yoke splines are dry and if you ran them dry long enough possible worn out.
Rarely do the Tcase wear out in the Ex and only occasionally do they fail even when abused Offroad, they are a stout piece, even with some metal shaving on the magnet I doubt you will ever have a failure. Best way to break one would be drive on dry pavement in 4wd for an extended period of time.
I'd agree with you on the slipyoke if I hadn't just replaced the driveshaft in June of '17 with a Tom Wood unit, which I've greased at every oil change.
