I have a 2001 Limited, 7.3, 4x4 that has factory heated seats. The elements are bad. My questions is whether or not Aftermarket elements can be wired into the Factory wired harness? I have been looking at the Aftermarket kit by Heated Seat Kits.com. Through reading numerous threads, they seem to be the choice. I am thinking it just might be easier to wire them by the directions that come with the kit and supplied hardware. If someone could point me to a existing thread or supply me additional information that would make me very appreciative.
eBay or amazon will have hog ring pliers and hog rings as well as seat heaters.
Wish I could tell you which heaters were quality ones to get but I got mine from a friends upholstery shop.
to use an aftermarket heater just cut the connector off yours and splice it onto the aftermarket heater.
I used Dorman 628-040 when I refinished my seats with leather from the Seat Shop. I believe I had to fold a portion of the bottom seat heater over on to itself in order for it to fit properly. I spliced into the factory wiring after finding the 12 V signal I was looking for. These Dorman seats come with a switch for a high and low setting and only needed a 12 V input. So I left my original switch in it's current position since I needed/wanted to use the provided 2 position switch. I mounted it on the side of the seat further below. These work very well and get uncomfortably hot on the high setting at times.
Good luck and just take your time. Hog rings are annoying. Make note of how everything is routed near the hinge during disassembly so it can be reassembled properly.

seat shop is awesome, call them I bet they sell the good ones.
I added factory heat to both front seats on my 2001. I was able to find the OE Ford elements for seat, and back, along with new seat foam. I think in the end, (the ford oe heaters anyway) are 12v, and probably all others, you'll want to look for a 12v element, and focus on the element coverage. It's best to have element coverage where there is body contact only. The carbon fiber ones are said to be the better ones. If I recall from what I learned about the OE module in the X, it's obviously 1 setting, and operates on a thermostat, and not resistance. I think this is why the standard wire element can really cause damage when it shorts out and burns the seat.

Check out the How-To link for replacing the heating element in the Tech Folder.
