Hey all,
I am going to put a tilt column in my 1950 F-3. Question is: I found a 78 F250 tilt column in my local wrecking yard, but it was from a floor shift 4 speed 4x4 truck. It looks like it is all there. How hard is it to rebuild/convert it into an automatic column shift complete with the PRNDL indicator? I used to work in the Ford parts department at a dealership and I know that the shifter part of the column was different, but I'm not sure how much extra work it would be to make it what I want it to be. If it means simply swapping out the collar and a few other small pieces, I'll do it.
I'm pretty sure there are a lot of pieces that would be needed. Placement of those pieces would be pretty difficult I would think. I'm sure it could be done, but I suspect it would be a bunch easier to find the column you want in the first place.
I would still buy the manual shift /w tilt because those are much more rare that the auto columns.

Yea, The tilt columns for floor shift trucks are VERY rare, you could put it on Ebay and most like double your money then buy the more common column shift column.

Either way, if the price is right I'd buy it and resell it. They sell for big money on ebay.

It would. Trying to convert a manual tilt over to an automatic tilt won't happen. The insides are completely different and none of the inner parts will swap over other than the turn signal switch.
Buy the 4 speed column no matter what, they are very rare.
This used to be an automatic tilt column. I converted it over to a 4 speed tilt column. Only a real Ford nut would of been able to detect the difference.
How much do you want for the column?? Ive been looking for a 4 speed tilt column for a while.
It is still in the wrecking yard, but I have removed it and hid it in the trunk of another car just in case I had to use it as a last resort. The yard charges $40 for a complete column and a core charge (why a core charge I don't know). Let me know if interested and we can work something out. Not sure what shipping would cost, but if you didn't need the steering wheel it might be easier to ship.

I just did the same thing for my truck build. I should have used "satin" paint though. I'm sure it will be more dull in no time once I stare driving it. I should have spend a little more time on the thin indicator ring, it did not turn out as good as I would have liked. That's what I get for being in a hurry...

I have a decent auto tilt column in the basement, only needs a lower bearing that I would trade you even up for that 4 speed column.
That looks good, fooled me. Did you make a new sleeve or just fill the hole.
If you don't mind saying .
I used a grinder to get rid of the shifter nub on the collar and then I used fiberglass mat to fill the hole and the shift indicator then finished it off with a skim coat of bondo. The PRNDL selector was ground down and then finished off with a coat of bondo as well.
AK Ford Guy do you have a picture of the other side? Looks pretty good other than the gloss black.

Unfortunately, not at this time. I was in a rush to catch a plane for work and snapped a few pics of the progress over the last couple weeks. I get home in another week and I'll get some better pics. I may drop the column again and do a better job, but for now, I am focused on getting the truck back together and on the road.
