Thinking about replacing the Power Train.

Good day all, I own a 2003 F250 4x4 with the V10. It now has over 200,000 miles on it and it is starting to get tired. I notice it struggling to pull the boat up the ramp or the occasional stump out of the ground. I am looking at retirement in three years so purchasing a new truck for $40,000 is somebody else's option. Besides, I really like my old truck. Thinking about repowering it and would like input on options. Should I just purchase a new/rebuilt engine/transmission or rebuild the current one? If I purchase, should I stay with the same engine and tranny or there a gold standard package out there? I am sure this is a huge ask but I appreciate all of the knowledge that is in this forum and if nothing else, you all will provide me with things to consider with my search.

Thank you
John

Changing to anything other than a V10/4R100 is expensive. There is a lot of modification required, and unless you can do it all yourself, it takes a lot of money.
The difference between buying rebuilds versus rebuilding what you have is time. You can get a rebuilt engine and trans and potentially swap them in a day. Pulling the old ones out and rebuilding adds time to that, sometimes a lot of time. Other than that there isn't much difference.

200K isn't much. I'd do a compression check and if that is within specs follow up with plugs and wires and anything else that could cause a decrease in performance.

Whenever people think gassers are "tired", absent a compression check showing real problems it normally makes me think that it really just needs new plugs/COPs and new cats, maybe injectors if you get a lot of dirty fuel. If you're one of the guys that sucks a quart of oil every 3000 miles working the engine, check the cats before you rebuild the motor. Have you done all the normal 2V V10 upgrades/mods like replaced the restrictive y-pipe in the exhaust, get a 5 Star tuner, 4.30 gears? All of those things will still be beneficial or transfer to any eventual rebuild of the motor, so absent a true issue on the engine why not get those out of the way first?

The only thing I would add to your list of parts to replace would be the O2 sensors.

+1

Bad catalytic converters will give you all kinds of problems. Also, I suggest to pony up the $ and use genuine OEM cats to replace if you do. Aftermarket ones are usually junk.

I'd do a thorough diagnostic on your motor and controls before thinking you need a new one. 200k is not a lot of miles in this day and age.

Yeah, true. I'm somewhat on the fence of treating those as maintenance items since I've had decent luck with getting codes for O2 sensors that go out, but he's having problems so when he get's the y-pipe replaced he should probably just do them.
