my shifter is loose and it causes issues to start at times. I’ve read a thread where they say there’s 2 torx screws to tighten. I’ve located the shifter under the dash and found several torx screws. The ones I found are tight and I do not think I’ve found the correct ones since it’s obvious the shifter is loose when looking under the dash. Can anyone please post a pic of the screws and plate I need to tighten? Thank you
That’s not something I’m ruling out. But when I came on this forum I found several threads saying the screws I mentioned either become loose or even just fall out. If I can fond these screws and assure they are there and tight, then I’ll go on to replacing the shifter tube.
On my 99, the Torx screws were loose. Tightening them helped some for a while, but the real problem was that the TRS switch on the transmission case was damaged and binding because of corrosion on the shift selector shaft on the driver’s side of the transmission case, under the truck.
the binding TRS causes excess load on the entire shift mechanism, causing the Torx bolts in question to loosen, the aluminum shift tube and plastic bushings in the column to wear, and the hole for the shift lever pivot pin to wallow out.
block your wheels, crawl under the truck, disconnect the shift cable from the black plastic TRS on the transmission shift shaft, and see if you can go through the shift pattern easily. It will be obvious if yours I’d stiff.

my torx screws were very tight and it still has a lot of play in the shifter. What do think issue is being that the screws never loosened?
Steve, look at my response. The shift tube is worn, go pull the cover to verify bit you are going to have to replace it. These parts are so common every dealership and parts store has them in stock.

the cover I need to remove is the one between the steering wheel and gauge cluster, right?
