Taking toploader shifter out

How do you get the shifter out of a toploader? Or can you? If you can and when you get it out will it mess things up inside for when you put it back together? I am putting a np435 in and figure if I take the shifter out it should be easier. Also how big of a hole should I need to cut to accomidate the shifter? Thanks for the help guys. Ryan

np435 handles come out its springloaded and hard. press down on the top of the base and turn a 1/4 turn to the left it should pop up. then pull it out.

Quick note: Top of the bezel, not the shifter.

if found a heavy pair of gloves works well, if you cant get it with that, you can use the ends of some channelocks

sometimes they can be stubborn
