yes it sputters just before it dies. I thought I saw somewhere on here that I would need a special adapter to connect into the fuel filter housing. If so what does it look like and where do I get one

This is the fitting you will need along with either an electric fuel pressure gauge and sender or a hose and a pressure gauge 0-100psi.
