I'm having a shop replace my bed rails because they've rotted. I want to harpoon the the tank while the bed is off. Does anybody know if everything clears to pull out the sending unit or do brackets need taken off/tank still dropped? I'll probably have to do it in their parking lot while they work on my bed so any pointers would be helpful. What's the most difficult part, any special tools (beside the pvc cutter)? How long should it take?
Very easy to do with the bed off. Standard Ford electrical plug for sender. The fuel lines are the quick push on connectors, so two sizes of the fuel line/trans separation rings. The main ring nut can be removed in two ways. I’ve used a small section of 1x2 to grab the ribs and tap it off. You can also buy or as I have make a tool the grabs the ring in several places to socket wrench ratchet it off. Just mark the nut and the tank so you know you rotate it tight back on.
The nut can get cross threaded going back on so be careful. They go on better it they are slightly heated by microwave or hot water. You can also grease the threads and the seal contract lip which makes it to achieve full rotation back to the original torque.
The tubes are easy to cut, and hopefully there isn’t much fuel in the tank. From aging some people have had the tube shatter when cutting, so you need to retrieve all the pieces.
Heres a vid the DTR made for a 7.3 but it’s good for pointers. He shows the tools.
Don't need to drop the tank. Just unscrew the cover .... it is kind of a pain to get off without the special tool for it, but with the bed off you should be able to unscrew it without the tool.
