Lately my starter has been skipping and/or grinding. If I back off the key and try to start again it starts fine. Is this more likely a starter issue or flywheel? My old ranger did this sometimes because it was a 2 bolt and it wouldnt stay aligned. It was the starter though and would make the noise until I re aligned it.
I am hoping starter as it is easier than flywheel.
This seems to be an issue on these trucks and there have been threads on it. Mine grinds occasionally, just about the time I forget about it it reminds me and grinds. Seems the engine always stops in one of 4 positions and as a result the flywheel/ring gear gets rounded on those 4 places. Many blame the poor design which allows the starter to spin before it engages the flywheel teeth. Some have rigged up a switch to throw the gear out into the flywheel first before cranking. I've considered that mod but mine happens so seldom it's not a priority right now.
check the starter bolts. mine would do this and it was the bolts had come loose, which I believe is a know issue with some of these trucks. I ended up having to heli-coil a couple of the thread holes then buttoned up with blue loctite

I sure hope not as this is the problem I had with my Ranger. It was super annoying.

I was wondering if it was the starter gear not fully engaging. I wouldn't worry about it, but it has been happening at least 1x a day lately. I wonder, if it is the starter gear not kicking out, does this get worse with age? I have had the truck for 10 years and have never touched the starter. I am going on a 10 day trip in August and would hate to get stranded.

Easy enough to find out, swap it out or at least buy another and carry it with you. Mine has not gotten worse with age and seems to do it less with a new starter

Same here minus the helicoil. My starter bolts are notorious for walking loose. I would check my starter every oil change and tighten the bolts. I finally got tired of it and used some blue (medium strength) Loctite on the bolts and all has been good since.
Before you buy a new starter slide under the truck grab the starter and try to move it. If it moves then the starter bolts are loose. Free fix if that's the case.
Yeah I prefer to not buy a new starter unless absolutely necessary. If it was lifetime. Warranty then I guess it doesn't matter. It will fail at some point.
Thanks for the help. I'll check it out. I guess I can remove the inspection plate and look at the teeth on the flywheel.
mine left me stranded in a parking lot one day, the starter had become loose enough that it would not engage the flywheel. I would suggest checking the tightness before anything else.
