I have 1974 internal balances 460 in my 77 f150. Bought engine used and put new top end on it, so the bottom end is still stock with 50,000 plus miles. Oil pressure when engine temp is 200 degrees is about 20psi down higgway and 5-10 psi idle. Taking into consideration this engine would classify as higher mileage worn engine what type of oil would be best?
I am currently running 10-30 I have researched this topic some but it seems to go in a million directions, but it does seem that a higher mileage engine should have a heavier weight? am in Oklahoma so summers are very hot and humid winters are not to bad.
And along with that...should seriously consider a zinc additive since todays oil you find at the McParts store doesn't have enough zinc to keep your cam and lifters from eating themselves. I have been using Shell Rotella 15W-40 for the past 10 yrs and haven't had any issues.
Motorcraft diesel oil 15w-40 with a Motorcraft FL-1A oil filter. The diesel oil has the zinc in it, plus in the winter you can run the 10w-30 diesel oil. Just my two cents. I buy oil from Walmart because it is the cheapest by far.
I've got about 12.5-15 psi at hot idle and about 35 psi at any RPM above 1500 RPM on my rebuilt 400 with about 100K miles on it now. I'm using Mobil1 15W-50 and it seems to like it. I had tried running Rotella T6 5W40, but I think it's just too thin for the Arizona heat.
X3 on Shell's Rotella 15-40 I use it in all my vehicles gas or diesel. Even though Rotella's zinc content has slowly been reduced over the years from 1500ppm to 1200ppm it's still approx. 400ppm more than most other oils on the store shelf.
In the 351m I just bought I used Valvoline 20-50 VR1 high zinc racing oil (it was on clearance 2.99 quart) oil pressure readings are 80psi @cold idle, 40psi @hot idle, 60psi @cruise. That's a significant increase over the old numbers which were 60/20/40.
So on an older high mileage motor I would have no problems running a 20-50 oil, or even a straight 50 oil if need be. If it's not a high zinc oil like VR1 just be sure to add a pint of zinc (ZDDP) additive.
