Hi,
I have seen vague references to a reflash of the 2017 PCM to match 2018 specs. Is this something Ford is doing? Is it free? Do I need to refer to a TSB or anything? Finally, does it do anything? I assume it doesn’t if so few are talking about it, but it seems to be something that a few people have done. Thanks.
I did it. My dealer did it for free but if your truck is issue free the dealer may charge. You gain 10hp. You won’t notice the hp gain, but I did get .3 mpg improvement it seems. Just ask your dealer to run module updates.
I do know there is a FSA for California truck to be reprogrammed for the Cali emissions laws. And it is not just the trucks from what I have been reading it is across the whole car line.
FSA Title: CALIFORNIA EMISSION WARRANTY PARTS COVERAGE
Field Service Action Number: 18L02
Don't know what it changes though. Shows this on my ford.owners page.
Ok found some thing about it, It's not a reprogram, it is an error in the warranty manual, the manual states the emissions warranty is 5 y 50000 m. when Cali requires it to be 7y 70000mi.
Honestly, if you are talking about the differences in the '17 & '18 6.7, I can't tell any difference. I haven't done any side-by drag races, towing or empty, but nothing has jumped out at me and made me notice any differences. Just my unscientific observations.
Does this PCM update *actually* increase HP and torque to 2018 levels, or is it simply a PCM update which does other things? My understanding is that the cylinder heads are different on a 2018 6.7L, and obviously a simple PCM flash is not going to change that.

I'm not really interested in doing this update.
Good question. I don't know what, if anything, the change is between 2017 and 2018. There was some marketing releases that suggested that the cylinder heads were changed. I have not seen any confirmation on that. I also heard somewhere that the cylinder head change was related to trying to quiet down the valvetrain. Again, just what I heard. Now there are a few people claiming to have updated their PCM, but it's unclear what if any gains are out there. It's also possible there are issues with the reflash...I don't know.
