Please help!

I was driving along in my 1976 f350 390 np435 4 speed, and all of a sudden I can't down shift to 2nd, it only grinds. If I am completely stopped it goes in just fine. I have adjusted my clutch linkage with no luck. I just want to see if anyone knows what the problem could be. Possible broken clutch finger?

Sounds like a trashed syncro.

I second that, that's about all that would cause it to grind. I had the same problem and it didn't look all that bad but in the end that's what was wrong.

Me 3rd but for S&G check the lube level being low might cause that.
I think it takes 80w-90 gear oil.

Lube is full and looks like new.. First to second does great, but third to second doesnt

try double clutching, if it works then it's the syncros.

Exactly! Matching your rev's should do the trick if the syncro is bad.

I have to be going uncomfortably slow in 3rd before 2nd takes. Or itll grind just the same as you describe. Im going to consider upgrading to a 4spd with overdrive over the next cpl of years. Ive yet to drive a 4spd granny low that wasnt jenky in its downshifting and didnt have a sloppy loose shifter.

NP435 has nylon inserts on the shift forks. 1/2 use different inserts than 3/4.
