I am looking for some help with my "new to me" 89 F150 Larriat.
Question 1:
I have 4 speed and it seems like it takes forever to shift. Almost like it does not want to go into the next gear. Is this just the way this transmission is or is there a potential problem?
Question 2:
Kind of along the same lines. To get into first gear I have to come to a complete stop. If i try at any speed above 0mph it just grinds. If I am at a stop and I let out the clutch in neutral, and then try to shift to first it also grinds. I have to go to second gear then to first. So my question again is this just the way things are or should i get this looked at?
The clutch does not seem to slip one bit, but it is almost like it is not releasing all the way.
Sounds like you have a clutch problem. How much free play do you have in the clutch pedal. If too much then the clutch will drag making it difficult to shift. However you may need a new clutch.
One thing about First gear is if you have what they call a granny gear they are so low that you almost have to come to a complete stop. Is your truck a 4X4 they were more common in the 4X4 pickups.
You have the granny four speed, either an NP 435 or T-18. First gear is not sychronized, meaning that you cannot shift into first while the truck is moving. Both of these are practically bulletproof trannies that you can put many miles on without any problems. My NP 435 has over 250,000 miles on it with no problems. I just take off in second gear unless I am pulling a really heavy load. What do you mean by it takes forever to shift? These transmissions weren't designed to be speed shifted. Mine shifts pretty smooth, but it doesn't even beging to compare to my Honda Civic. You can row through the gears in that thing like there's no tomorrow.
i had a granny 4 in my 87 f-150 300/6 i was having the same types of problems a friend changed my slave cyl and clutch master cyl. truck shifted smooth as silk after that. but your not gonna get quick gear changes out of it. well not like a little rice burner
Lol definately not a speed shiftin tranny. Put it in 1st gear too quick and you'll bust your knuckles on the radio (done that before) Put it in reverse too quick and you'll smash your passengers leg (done that one also). That should be a hint that its not made to be shifted quickly.
I didnt know that 1st was not sychronized, but this makes sense for the problems i have been experiencing with 1st.
I have not owned a truck before, just sports cars(300zx, mazdaspeed, datona shelby z). I wasnt expection it to shift like a sports car, but it dosent get into the next gear untill the revs have droped all the way down.
