For those that didn't get one of these from Ford (like me), I decided to make my own, (very simple too). LED of your choice, rubber grommet, hole saw and wire it up.
Hey OP, I really like the idea of this mod, my truck didn't come with the tailgate light either. Can you please post some links to the LED light and rubber grommet you used. And, can you post some pictures of how you wired it up? Thanks in advance.
I was thinking about something like the marker lights linked below. These might even eliminate the need for a rubber grommet, just put some silicone around the backside of the light's shaft/bezel for waterproofing. I just don't know where to wire them up to after that...
I was surprised to see that on my truck, had not heard of it, definitely did not order it...was it part of the $700 camera package? That's all I can think or, or maybe it came with the LED in-the-cargo-box lights...??
My 2019 Lariat has it and I don't have a $700 camera package but I do have the cargo box lights. Not sure why it is on the truck, I didn't special order it just bought it as is.

From what I understood when I got my truck, Lariats and up come standard with it. To get it from factory on an XL or XLT, you had to have the camera package. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

I had a pair of these lights from NAPA (years ago), made by "Trucklite", any light will do to your liking. Run the power wire through the tail gate up to the cab and I tapped into an upfitter switch, negative ground. Took twenty minutes.
