my od button keeps turning on and off by itself when the shifter moves.. I play hell with it trying to engage or disengage... anyone know how to get to the wiring behind the button? I’ll look for videos this is just the first place that came to mind...
The best way to fix it is to replace the shift lever with a new shift lever. It around $40.to $50 and come with new button. About a 20 minute change out. I just did mine a 2 weeks ago. 1 pin to drive out with a punch and hammer.its not to tight and 1 plug to plug in. 3 screws in the steering column to take the cover off. A tip . After you tap the pin out ,just pull the shift lever out.its kind of spring loaded ,but nothing will fly out.
I had a problem with the OD wire shorting out on my truck years ago. It's actually a common problem. If you want to completely remove the shroud around the steering column, you'll have to remove the ignition switch assembly. It's really easy.
Look on the underside of the switch and you'll see a hole with a retaining pin inside. Put the key in the switch and turn the key on but don't start the truck. Stick a skinny screwdriver or punch into the hole and depress the retaining pin. The entire switch assembly with the key in it will slide right out. Remove a couple of screws to separate the two halves of the shroud and it will come right apart and you can easily get to the wire to the button.
It broke and burnt a little bit at the very bottom where it comes out of the shifter. Replaced all the wires works like new.. but when I hooked the batteries the CD player clicked and clicked for about 3-5 seconds... thoughts?
