Just had #1 injector fail on me this weekend. Took it to Ford Dealer to have them identify which one it was. Shop foreman was one who diagnosed it. Said broken tip and burned off glow plug. Also said the hfcm was not building enough pressure which caused the injector to fail. He asked about blue spring, I had put that in last fall. Also new motorcraft hfcm last fall. I'm running rotella 5w40 and doing oil filter every 5000 and fuel every 10000. All motorcraft filters with proper cap. Are there any other things that would have caused the failure? Would monitoring fuel pressure when edge cts help to catch this sooner? I'm just running scan gauge right now. Just trying to take care of my truck and understand a little better. Thanks in advance .
Watching fuel pressure is very important. Only you can say if it would have helped or not. If it actually was low pressure that took out the injector, then yes, it probably would have helped.
Is there a OBDII scanner that monitors fuel pressure? I didn't think so. I think you have to tap into the upper bowl or the line. But that would be good to monitor. I got more injector education that I ever wanted because of a bad pump.
Broken tip and glow plug don’t play nice in a cylinder. Are they taking a look with a borescope?
The thought of a boroscope didn't cross my mind till later this afternoon. I'm with you on the not playing nice . Just a side note, thanks for all the research you've done in electrical on these trucks TMT.
As far as I know fuel pressure doesn't go through the obdII . I want to say that the edge cts 2 can. I was hoping somebody had some insight.
You have to add a fuel pressure sensor and gauge. These engines never had one, so the PCM doesn't receive that signal ..... it is ALL aftermarket to get that.
Lots of threads on it. A search will turn up the needed information.
I lost a motor to a broken glow plug tip. Others running too long with a broken injector tip have done the same. They need to look in the cylinder and see what has happened before you go too deep into your pocket. They may want to pull the head to see the damage and of course retrieve the end of the parts before anything else is done. People who are very lucky have the debris stay in the piston cup, but it's rare.
If valves are damaged, it can be just new valve, or a new head. If the piston is imprinted, a new piston and head. If the cylinder wall gets scored as mine was, a new motor.
