Steering problem question - intermittant
Good morning. I own a 2006 F-350 Lariat diesel with 75K miles on the ODO. Recently, it has developed an intermittent steering issue - after driving 2 or 3 miles, the truck pulls slightly to the right or left - when re-correcting (turning the steering wheel in the opposite direction), the steering "action" feels mushy - like connected through a spring. Once re-corrected, the truck steers OK for a while until the next occurrence. This happens on straight roads with a perfect surface as well as winding roads in poor condition. I took the vehicle to a local mechanic and we checked the front end for safety purposes as I needed to use the vehicle. Raising one side and then the other, we found the ball joints worn with suggested replacement. Additionally, spinning the wheels, we found the brake on one side to be slightly rubbing. Before I decide on replacing lots of parts, I want to look elsewhere such as the pwr steering pump to try and identify alternate failure possibilities. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Steve

Check your front axle u joints, sounds like one or both of them may be bad, jack the front end up, lock your hub in, turn the wheel all the way left or right and spin the wheels. If you have a bad one you will know it.
