Steering acting up

I have a 1989 Ranger 2.3L 4x4 with 183,000 miles. Recently I have had issues with the steering. At times after a turn you have to pull the steering wheel back to center, like it won't straighten out on its own. At other times a slight movement in the steering wheel results in a big change in direction and the wheel moves too easily. The power steering seems to work. It feels like a problem with something loose or broken in the steering linkage or the steering box. Typically when the wheel is turned to the right it has to be pulled back and there is a lot of extra resistance. When the wheel is centered the slightest turn either left or right can sometimes cause the wheels to move too much.

Sorry for the long, confusing post... it's a hard problem to describe. Any help is appreciated.

Look at steering linkage espeically the wear points, i.e. ball joints.

You answered your own question. Have someone wiggle the steering wheel back & forth while you put your hand on the different steering parts near the joints. Clunking or excessive movement will indicate the location of the problem. And judging from your description, I'd stop driving this truck until it's fixed. It sounds dangerously close to failure.
