This started yesterday on the way back from lunch. I pulled out of the parking lot and it was behaving a lot like it did before I rebuilt the trans. It would shift into second fine but nothing after that. I pulled up to the stop light put it in neutral and back in drive with no change. Pulled out on the highway and after about a mile of it not shifting pulled over. Put the truck in park, so I thought, turned it off and put the ts back in the stock position. Started the truck back up and it jumped forward. Indicator said park but it was still in one of the forward gears. Moving the shifter anywhere between park and drive resulted in the truck staying in a forward gear. This persisted until at a stop sign I dropped it all the way to first("1") then back to drive. It drove normal after that back to work.
Leaving work that day it did the same thing except it started in park but moving to reverse put it in a forward gear. This time I went straight to first("1") then back to reverse and it worked fine. Went into neutral and drive fine as well. I drove it to the gym then home after that without issues.
After getting home I checked the nss which was maybe a mm out of alignment in neutral as well as the shifter lever on the column that is know for going bad, it was tight.
I could not replicate the issue that night in my drive way but again this morning leaving for work it started in gear. All shifter positions resulted in forward movement until going all the way to the "1" position then it acted normal. Drove to work fine shifts fine, goes into to o/d and locks up the converter fine. No codes, no flashing o/d light, fluid level is good and smells/ looks fine.
I'm kind of at a loss for what this could be. Other than a randomly whiny first gear planetary the trans has been fine since I put it back together. @@Mark Kovalsky feel free to chime in.
Cliffs:
Shift lever randomly results in all positions being a forward gear until moved in to the first("1") position. After that it acts normal if left in drive, 2 or 1.
Disconnect the cable from the trans lever. Put shifter in neutral and get under truck and manually pull the trans lever all the way back to rear of truck then go forward two clicks THATS NEUTRAL. Then slid the clip back down to lock cable and trams lever back together. Sounds like it's not adjusted correctly

I'll give it a shot tonight. When I tested the nss position I verified the truck was in neutral before shutting it off and then checking alignment. It seems to me to be some sort of linkage issue with what its doing though. The rebuild has about 1100 miles on it with no issues so far. It also drives completely normal when I cycle from "1" back to drive.
It isn't anything electrical. Reverse will work normally no matter what the electronics think or command. Reverse isn't engaged with any solenoids, if the manual valve attached to the shift linkage is in reverse you'll have reverse.
Mark that was my understanding of how it worked as well, that is why I was leaning towards a linkage issue. I disconnected the shifter cable from the trans and set both to neutral manually last night. Drove to work fine and when I parked it went into park correctly. I then tried to go back into reverse and it acted like it was in neutral and neutral was in drive. Moving back to park it didn't act like it was in drive but giving it throttle had no throttle response and it almost acted like it was loading the drivetrain when a brake is applied and you give it throttle. Moving the shifter to "1" and back to park resulted in everything acting normal again.
Something is wacky with the linkage. It could be in the column, or the cable, the outer linkage on the trans, or even where the linkage connects to the manual valve on the valve body.
It's only messed up on my once since re aligning the shifter and linkage on the transmission manually. Driving fine other than that issue. Still slightly confused.
The shifter itself doesn't feel like it has any slop in it. The truck only has 136k on it as well so i wouldn't think they would be worn out already. Hoping to get my Cherokee out of the garage here soon so i can look at the truck a little closer.
Same issue any update partner!? Did u ever get ah fix for it!?
