shifter linkage; problem area?

Is the shifter linkage on the newer Rangers a problem area? My 94 is difficult to get in any gear on occasion, usually after it has been parked in reverse for a while. Once I get it in a gear, it's normal and smooth shifting.

I recall hearing someone mention years ago that the shift linkage on the older Rangers was a problem, same deal on the newer ones?

I pulled the shifter surround and shot some PB Blaster down there from the top, seemed to help a little. Any comments/suggestions?

thanks

888, getting into another gear after being parked (if you're in reverse I assume you mean first, and vice versa) is a result of the synchros not lining up. And since your sitting still, they don't move to line up, so the gear can't engage. Either shift into fourth then into the gear you want (this seems to be a cure all for synchros not lining up for some reason), or put it in neutral and drop the clutch, then hit the clutch and select the gear. I use the fourth trick, I think handyman taught me that way way back when.

I typically park on a small incline so I put it in first or reverse with the ebrake on depending on which way I am facing. After hitting reverse a bit to get out of the spot if I'm facing uphill, it's tough to get it in any other gear after getting it out of reverse.

I usually can get it going by letting out the clutch once and trying to ease it into one of the other gears, usually second is the one that works. Seems that part of the problem is that there is a lot of play to the first gear side of the pattern and it's easy to miss the gate position for first and second. After I get it into first once, it's fine and shifts ok.

Really weird and seemed consistent with shift linkage wear (VW) or a loose gate (Volvo). Don't know how a Ranger is laid out so I had to raise the flag for help.

I'll try your recommendations and pay more attention to what works.

thanks
