I've never done a water pump before. (on a 6.0), but it looks like I get to do one tomorrow. Any tips, tricks, things out of the norm, special tools I might need?
Any bad brands to stay away from?
Glad the heat index is only going to be 105 tomorrow.
I think the OEM ones are pretty good to be honest with you. I know that the metal impellers are considered desirable, but I think plastic (when the right plastic and the right engineering) is potentially better. Mainly it doesn't corrode. I think OEM resolved its early issues and has a good reliable product. Other opinions may be opposite, but still welcomed!
All that said, I have a BPD water pump and think that it is very high quality.
Went with the carquest premium from advance auto due to the 20% off online coupon I had. Order online and pick up in the store.
Water pump change out took about 2 minutes. Unfortunately, the shroud and fan clutch took up another 2 hours. Air hammer trick didn't work on the fan clutch nut. had to struggle with a wrench and the 2 jaw contraption fan pulley holder thingy.
I used to have something like tool #1, but loaned it out and don't seem to have gotten it back. I have something similar to tool #2, which I used along with a crescent wrench to get the fan clutch nut. (usually the air chisel does the trick by itself). I also used similar tool #2 to get the pulley bolts broke loose.
My tool #2 is a Lisle, has grooves cut in to grab the bolt heads, and the width of the jaws is adjustable. Need to figure out who has my fan pulley wrench tool. Too hard to get a crescent in there and get the #2 tool just right without a few curse words.
I used an 18” crescent and the loaner fork shaped tool from the auto parts store. It was pretty quick just plan ahead and knock out a few other things while you have the shroud off.
Been a long time since I have watched it, and this post is probably too late to help, but it is on changing the fan clutch and can help w/ a water pump change also.
Not sure what year you're working on --- if the early year (90mm), I'd recommend moving to a 100mm water pump with the improved (hardened, steel) impeller. Will require a front cover change, but that in itself is a huge positive as the waterflow will improve dramatically since the new design places the flow at the 3'oclock position vice the 4'oclock position ............
The BFD water pump is overpriced ($350 shipped), over hyped and not much value added for the obscene price...............alternatives:

Changed mine last week and I didn't have the special tool for the fan nut. I carefully stuck a small prybar in the water pump pulley vents then used a big 20"+ crescent wrench on the nut. Hardest part was spinning the nut off after it broke loose since it wouldn't spin off by hand...I had to keep using that big crescent wrench = tedious.
Move the battery cable out from between the radiator during removal/install...that extra inch of tilt on the radiator is valuable. Shroud will go in/out easily if you take your time.
I grabbed the fan clutch and spun it, taking the nut with it after it was broke free. I removed the radiator brackets and moved the battery cable. Getting the shroud out was easy enough. Getting it back in, one side was stubborn took a few curse words.
