Hey, all!
I believe that my wiper motor has bought it. I usually rely on either youtube or by just googling it, I have usually been able to find the answer. However, seemingly not this time.
How does one go about doing this? Does the dash have to be removed, a procedure of which seems to me to be a big drastic and time-consuming?
You don't have to remove the instrument panel. But I did just to have a little more free space and light. You should be able to see the bolts (3 of them I think) that mount the gear box to the firewall. Of course the linkage arms have to come off too. I would take a picture of the positions of the linkage arms and the wiper motor shaft too before you move anything. This will help make sure you get the new wiper motor into the "parked position". It's a real pain in the A__ to have to go back under there, after seeing the wipers stop in the middle of the windshield. Don't ask me how I know this. Check the new motor to make sure it has enough grease inside before you install it too, most have barely the min. amount of grease.
The first pic shows the passenger side wiper arm mounted to the inner cowl, above the firewall, below the dash. There are three bolts on each side. You'll need to remove the wipers from the outside before you pull these out.In the second pic, along the left side (sorry for the terrible pic), is where the motor mounts. I don't think you need to remove the wipers to replace the motor though. Could be wrong on that.
Yeah I like to minimize the obstructions so I would remove the instrument cluster which isn't difficult to do. I'd remove the ash tray completely, the defrost hoses also to start with. You may have to remove the radio as well. Prepare for F-words but it's do-able.
I just did this over the winter. Some recommendations:
1. Consider replacing both arm assemblies. At the very least get new seals for the arms and replace those. The Dennis Carpenter ones are of good quality.
2. Get a new clip for the arm-to-motor shaft. Getting it out may deform it ( I deformed 1, and was glad I had a replacement)
3. Take out the radio, ash tray and instrument cluster. You will mostly be able to access tools from below, but the access holes will allow you to see what you are doing. I did not remove defroster hoses, and don't think it would have helped.
4. Pay attention to the washer and wave washer on the output shaft of the motor. I am getting loud squealing now and believe that is the culprit. I'll be taking mine apart. Again.
5. Be careful getting the wiper arms (outside arms) off of the splined shaft of the transmission arm. It is easy to damage the paint there.
6. Clean the ground strap and ensure you have a good ground path. This can cause a ton of trouble even with a good motor.
7. If you have not done so already, consider upgrading to delay wipers at this time.
Would you happen to have an exploded diagram for a 59 f100 electric windshield wiper assembly. Trying to convert from the vacuum motor setup which sucks!!
