shifting issue?

96, F-350, 7.3 litre. Just got in the truck to get a tire change over, it has been sitting for a little over 2 weeks. Very hard shifting between 1 & 2, then lurched into 3rd after a strain. The speedo was not working either. After the tire change over everything was fine. Speedo works and shifted normally. I suppose something is going to puke shortly. What to look for?

The VSS on the rear might need replacing or just cleaned. Also check the wiring to it.
