Hey yall!!
I know I have not been around for while. summer is my busy season then I just had to spend most of the early fall trying to slinging arrows after elk.. hope you all can forgive me.
Any how the old black beast is giving me some problems. and I was hoping some one might have some advice. first of all the truck is a 97 f350 cc e4od 4x4 200Kmi. the trouble is that my speedo has started jumping around. it happends most in first gear, and some times seemes to coincide with a tought time shifting out of first. EG driveing in first. truck wont shift up truck lurches needle jumps and the truck shifts at the same time. some times driving in fist the speedo will read 0 mph till it shifts to second. but some times I'll be driving in od with no change in speed and the needle will drop to 40 mph then back up??
any thoughts. I plan to check grounds but are there any partiular I should check,, or specific grounds.. is my tarny finaly kicking the bucket?? I hope not ,, My girl friend has to haul a horse trailer out to reno on thurseday...
i would have to guess bad vss. if not exciter ring.
take the old one with you when you get the new one to ensure you get the right one there are 2 types.

what is the vss ?? or exciter ring??how tough to replace and how exspecive?/ any way to test to see if it is realy is the problem other than just replacing it and seeing if it works?
vss is that plug in the top of the rear end check the connection on it make sure the connector is clean, i cant remember the testing for it at the moment ill try to find it tonight. the vss is easy to change out, easier than a cps. i doubt the exiter ring being the problem, is the ring inside the diff that thte vss reads off of.
it must be all the muddin in the pastures that killed that vss.......
thanks. jake, Well there might bee a little mud involved, Ijust got stuck in a iragation ditch the other day with 1 ton of cow hay in the bed. but the speed o was jumping before that. had to unload the hay to get out..
I
'lll go take a look at the vss this morninig,, would the vss have any thing to do with my (ABS) light being on. that is an other proiblem I'd like to clear up.
Hey jake ,, how's that little NV filly working out??
Yep, the VSS will lite-up the ABS lite. Sometime just cleaning the crud off the vss fixes the problem. The exciter ring is attached to the ring gear in the differential. You can see it thru the hole after the vss is removed. If the exciter is screwed up you have bigger problems but I doubt you'll find that tho.
Not wishful thinking, The tranny is controled by other sensors and The VSS signal that's used by the PCM to calculate vehicle speed to determine when to shift and controls the shift pressures.
we ended up givin that filly to a friend since we didnt have room in the trailer on the run to texas. i love it here should have gotten outta kalifornia years ago!!
