I just bought a 2004 f-150 about 2 days ago as my first car. The truck is in great condition, no rust and drives great. Yesterday when i was driving it i heard a metal on metal screeching sound coming from my front left wheel. The person i bought it from told me that it had a frozen brake caliper, but I'm pretty sure the noise i was hearing was not from a caliper. The truck did not pull to the left while making the noise which is why i think its not the brakes at all. This is my first car so I'm not really sure what this could be, and i don't wanna spend what little money i have left taking it to a mechanic. Anyone have a similar problem and a solution? Im pretty lost on what to do so any help and advice is greatly appreciated. thanks.
i would say bearing then. does it only make the noise at a certain speed?
bearing would make sense if only when truck is on ground, weight of truck puts a decent amount of pressure on a bearing.
I don't know, I've been afraid to drive it since it started making the noise...didnt want to make it worse. If it is a bearing is that easily fixable? or should i take it in and have a mechanic look at it?
Im having similar issues but screetchin is only on left turns and screetching will stop upon letting off gas pedal. Havent been this stumped in a while. Hoping new rotors and alignment will help
Yea I’m not really sure what it is. I noticed it gets much louder after driving it for longer periods of time. If u figure out what it is or find a way to fix the problem please let me know as I will do the same. Thanks.
LOOK at the disc.
Does it show signs of metal to metal contact either side?
Move the wheel to see if a bearing is loose.
If the caliper is sticking and has worn the pads out, you need to replace the caliper, and pads both sides.
Look at the pads for thickness wear!
If 2wd, the wheel bearings are easy to replace if needed.
If 4wd, the bearing 'pack' needs to be replaced. if needed.
Good luck
The disk has some grooves, but it’s not too chewed up to be making such a horrible sound. I’ll check if the wheel is loose to see if it’s the bearing. I’ve also read that ford trucks seem to have a problem with the IWE solenoid being the cause for this sound. Anyone have any experience with the IWE making a screeching sound? I’m really stumped on what this could be.
IWE disengages the 4 x 4 when motor starts....... put the selector in 4 x 4 and drive a short ways and see if the noise changes.. better to drive on dirt / grass / gravel if possible with 4 x 4........ short ways on concrete for test is OK.
