I have 2006 F150, Crew cab, 173,000 miles. I am getting a roaring noise while driving straight or turning to the right, but if I turn the wheel to the left a little it stops. A friend said it was the U-joints and Carrier Bearing. I'm not sure. Would the noise stop by turning the wheel slightly if it is the U-joints?
normally that would lead you to believe it is a wheel bearing. Is it a 4 x 4 ? Lift the front end off the ground an inch and rotate each front tire slowly. The brake will drag somewhat. You might be able to tell a difference in left and right bearing noise. If not, you have to remove the wheel and brake caliper so all you are hearing is the bearings. Noise and "feel".. resistance to roll.
Thanks for the replay Steve, It's not the wheel bearings. That is the 1st thing we checked. No, it is not a 4 x4. We have even used the spare to check all 4 tires. The sounds is like amplified road noise. This just started a couple of weeks ago and is getting louder.
Had the same thing happen to me on my '07 2wd F-150. No noise when turning right, but a loud noise when going straight or turning left. Went immediately away again when turning right. It was a bad wheel bearing. The reason it is making noise when going straight or right is because there is a load on the bearing that is bad. Mine did it when turning the opposite direction of the way you described yours.
Mine was right front. So, yours will probably be left front wheel bearing, since it makes noise when turning right, putting load on the other side.
