Unfortunately I didn't arrive at that conclusion until after I'd spent $20 something bucks on a rubber stubby antenna that ultimately did not remain on the truck through a car wash. I'd been through car washes dozens of times with factory antennas on F250s with zero issues.

Nothing special that I could see. Grabbed the ball with with a set of vise grips, just didn't close them with super force. Twisted a little and the ball pulled off. Cut the antenna to my desired length with a set of lineman pliers. I don't think I had any proper epoxy in the garage at the time. I used some Permatex gasket maker to stick the ball back on. 4 or 5 car washes later it's still there.
