Sold my H2, replaced it with a Lariat F150 thinking that I'd have less problems with height in parking garages and more space in my own garage at home.
As it turns out, the 150 actually takes up more space. Oh well...
One thing I do need to fix though is the antenna. The tip keeps banging into everything. I almost took out a light in our garage at work. Has anyone replaced the antenna with a shorter version?
I haven't done anything about it yet, cause I wasn't sure if there is anything to do or not, but the one and only thing that I dont absolutely love about this truck (04 Screw XLT) is that the antenna hits the bottom of the garage door when I go in and out. I can live with it if nothing can be done, but I hope to hear some replies also as to how to get a shorter one.
There is a good black metal one available at Advance Autoparts, about 14 inches long, with a curl in the middle like a cell phone antenna.....works great and doesn't bop the top of the garage door. Comes with universal adaptors and it lines up perfectly with the Ford antenna base.
I put silicon gelly into the thread hole so it can be removed if necessary.
Twelve bucks.
Good luck.
I think of it as a safety feature. If you are driving in a parking garage or somewhere else for the first time it hits, letting you know that you are close to the max height. Particularly important if you install a daystar lift. Even with building codes legislating heights, an inch or 2 could make a difference in smacking your roof into a beam. Antennas are kinda cheap. Maybe Ford will make a roof radar next for guys like me hehehehehehe. Just a thought
I'm with y2knavy - I like the height of the antena for the simple fact that it will hit something before my windshield will! I have a 4x4 Lariat, stock height, and the first weekend I owned the truck, my girlfriend I went to the Galleria (a mall in Houston, TX) where I soon learned that my truck was NOT designed with the Galleria in mind. I experienced multiple heart-attacks as I drove past low-lying beam after low-lying beam through the parking garage and thought for sure that my roof was going to be coming off. I have a moonroof also and I would look up to see no more than 2" (literally) between the glass and the concrete beam. Two inches may seem like a lot but not when the ground slopes and those 2" can be taken up by any increased or decreased angle of approach or even running over a coke can left in the way. I soon learned that the antena was my indicator if it was safe to proceed. I, for one, like the height of the antena - it's a safety feature right up there with the airbags in my opinion! haha Then again if you don't have the 4x4, the height is pretty much safe and I have seen several aftermarket anetenas. The threads on automotive antanas are pretty-much universal, you can pick one up at any auto parts store.
I had the same thing happen to me with my 94 Scab, have not been in a parking garage yet with my 04 Scab but expect the same. I did have the dealer swap the stainless one for a black carbon style, don't really know if its shorter.
With a heavy duty wire cutter, a metal file, and a can of satin finish black paint.....you can make your antenna ANY length you want it to be AND make it look nice too.....but you will have to sacrifice the little round ball on the end......
