I have a 1996 f250, with the 7.5l. I am in the process of getting all the parts to do the 6liter tuneup, i already have the MSD coil, and i can find the ford performance plug wires. I have read all about the 6liter tuneup, and i know you have to get a vap and rotor kit thats made with the brass terminals. Seems like everone recommends getting the MSD capa and rotor for this, but the only cap and rotor i can seem to find is the one made of stainless steal terminals. Is this ok? Or does someone have the part #s for this MSD kit or even a different cap and rotor combo. I can find the Taylor Ignitions cap and rotor thays made with the brass terminals, is that ok? Thanks for the input
I never even advanced my timing. No way I would ever gap my plugs wider than Ford says. I am the one that always got acceptable mileage from my 460 while the mileage myths circled the bowl.
Use it the way Ford intended and it's a great combo. The 460, E4OD and 4.10 gears is hard to beat. Closest thing to diesel you can get. If you live at high altitude, get a turbo diesel.
The original coil is light years ahead of previous generation's coils, it's perfect. Buy air filters a little more often.
If you want a hot rod buy something far lighter than a pickup truck to start with. Build a race car, take it to the track behind your truck.
"Trucks are sexy" is a perversion and a fetish and is propagandized by the marketing industry. Ridiculous abuse of the adolescent mind.
System modifications have to increase rpm or cylinder pressure to make more power. Always ask yourself how a modification is accomplishing this.
Im not looking for a hotrod, and i dont care about gas mileage, its a 460. Gas mileage is what it is. I i use my truck as it is intended, i pull our tralier all over the place. I only have ever bought motorcraft replacement parts for my truck (until this one coil). I have bought all the parts the Banks has made for it to gain better pulling/ torque performance. So i was only looking at seeing if this whole 6liter tuneup is worrth the little extra power it might get. Not looking to improve quarter mile times. What car or truck guys out there dont want to get the most out of thier truck. (Without doing harm to it or destroying) the vehicle they drive...
By the way, if you read a post and dont have anything positive to add to it. Dont read it. Go right on by. I pull and use my truck as a truck damn near daily. Thats why i bought a truck!!!
As far as the 6litre tune up goes, I haven't done it nor am I likely to ever mess with it. However, done properly it may provide a crisper throttle response. Maybe. More power, I don't think so, but that is my opinion. As long as you don't get crazy with the advance it won't hurt anything either so I say if you want to have at it. It's your truck.
When I had my 94 F150 with the 351W I spoke to numerous parts guys and a few mechanics about replacing the ford coil with a high output aftermarket one. All of them said "the Ford coil is already a high output coil. Spending your money on an aftermarket high output coil is a waste of money as the Ford coil is already high output."
Thus I never replaced it. Plugs, rotor, distributor cap, plug wires from Ford were what I used for my tune ups. The truck ran great right up to when I sold it.
Agreed, i have only ever used motorcraft parts as replacements, the PO put on the MSD coil. I am a firm believer in using manufacturer parts... except for exhausts, and stuff like that. I do have the Banks power system, with tranny module, and torque converter. That was all put on by previous owner too. So never felt truck before those parts were added. Tranny does shift amazing tho
