87 Tuneup?

I have a 1987 5.0. It is time for a tuneup. I priced plug wires distributor cap rotor button and plugs at the Ford dealership. All of that came to $230. To me this seems very expensive. At Summit racing and other places like that you can get these parts much cheaper. My question is are the ford parts worth it versus tuneup Kit's from other places? Or maybe the summit kits are just as good or better than Ford. Your thoughts please.

No, go to Napa or other parts store. Buy Motorcraft plugs, good quality wires, cap and rotor. The dealer is not where you buy tune up parts.

Thanks, I will do that. Also are the MSD or Accel type high output coils worth the $?

Generally no, not unless you have a seriously built truck. The only exception is the MSD Blaster 3, and that advantage is just that it's slightly more vibration resistant and that it can't leak transformer coolant if it is installed in an application where it lays on its side.

MSD is notorious for leaving you stranded, towed, lighter wallet, and headaches. Stick with Motorcraft.

I was a MSD fan years ago, now I know better.

And as for Accel - they're great if you like buying someone else's stuff in yellow and paying three times as much for it or more. For example, Accel plugs are just Nippondenso normal U-groove plugs - only painted yellow and with Accel's name silk screened on them. And, yup, triple the price.

I run the blaster for more plug gap, but be damn sure there's a motorcraft coil, among other things, floating around in the glovebox!
