I want to remove the container/box that holds the PCM in a 1997 Ranger without breaking it. This is the type that is located on the upper firewall slightly off-center toward the passenger side. Can anybody tell me how to do this? Thanks.
I see you have 92 reads & no replies, so I'll see if I can get things started. I've not had my 99 Ranger PCM out, but I did have to replace the 94 Taurus computer & it was mounted inside the passenger compartment under dash, to the firewall, up above the glove box liner & it looks like the Ranger location is similar.
SO, disconnect the battery B- cable & stow it so it cant spring back to make contact while you work to remove the PCM.
Open the glove box door & press inward on Both sides to flex them enough so the stop tangs clear so it'll drop down out of the way more.
Remove the glove box fasteners & pull the glove box out.
Look up through the glove box opening & toward the firewall, to see/locate the PCM.
If there, raise the hood & disconnect it's electrical connector. I think its a 10mm fastener. I can't remember but I think there were two fasteners on either side of the electrical connector, holding that end of the PCM case to the passenger side of the firewall, so remove them.
My Taurus computer had a support strap on the passenger compartment end of the case, taking the load off & holding that end up, remove its fastener & wiggle & pull to loosen the PCM & it should drop down for removal.
Let us know what you find & how it goes.
