I am done with my e4od swap on my 86 f350 and will post updates to that later, right now i got a code 93 and when it appeared the transmission was like it was in neutral when allowed to shift itself shifting manually was no problem. Additionally it only did it once and all i did to get back to normal was turn the truck off and back on the trans was obviously in limp mode when i cut it off but has been fine since. What do i check? Solenoid pack, plug and wiring for the solenoid pack or the computer? I have driven the truck a pretty good bit since i finished it Saturday and it just acted up that one time other than that it has done very good. I have added a picture of what my scanner said with the code... hopefully
The list I have shows that code is for the torque converter clutch solenoid. I don't know which description is correct. Either way, this code cannot cause a neutral condition.
The problem is either an open or short circuit. In order of most likely to least likely you'll find the problem in the wiring between the PCM and the transmission, or a bad solenoid, or possibly the PCM. The PCM is not at all likely to be the problem, but it is not impossible.
Thanks mark, i looked at the connector for the shift solenoid and some one has done some bad wiring with about 3 miles of electrical tape so i ordered a new connector and a box of self sealing butt connectors from napa, if that doesn't fix it i will try the pcm since it has a new solenoid pack in it. Actually i have a pcm for a 94 non turbo truck its new in the box will it work? Thanks
When the butt connectors come in don't pick them up. They are so-so for use inside the cab, but I'll guarantee you'll have problems down the road if you use them under the truck. Get a soldering iron and some heat shrink tubing to make a permanent fix.
The turbo and non-turbo IDI transmissions were exactly the same in every way, including the solenoid body. But if replacing the connector doesn't fix it you should electrically check the wiring from the PCM to the trans. It's far more likely to be a wiring issue than either the solenoid body or the PCM.
I removed the wiring harness from the transmission and found that i had several naked wires going to the solenoid pack, as well as heat seal butt connectors that had been overheated and melted through, the red plastic terminal divider in the neutral safety switch plug was missing and the 2 wires to the speed sensor were naked at the plug and touching . After replacing the 3 plugs and the neutral safety switch it seems to do much better so far, the only complaint i really have is that it up shifts earlier than i like and doesnt downshift as soon as i would like but it may be because the truck i pulled all the parts from had a 4:88 rear axle ratio and mine is a 3:08 or a 3:55 i set the flps to 1.2 at idle and it hits like 4.0 wide open so this may just be good as it gets.
Yeah if your using a F-Super Duty/F450 TECA in a pickup with 3:55/4.10 gearing, she wont shift at the correct speeds. Those control units are for 4.63/5.13 gearing.
I tried putting a pickup TECA in a F450 with 5.13's.......that's a no go lol.They run about $100 for a reman TECA.
As for turbo vs non turbo TECA's.I can't tell any difference.I have a turbo unit in my F450 and a n/a unit in my f250.I also had a n/a unit in my F450 and I've switched back and forth and I can't tell.I always guessed that perhaps during a downshift from od to 3rd that perhaps the converter remains unlocked a touch longer if using a turbo unit to help keep boost up but I dunno. If there really are any changes I can't feel them.Perhaps I could if I had a pickup turbo unit to play with.In the 5.13 geared truck,it just always just feels like a tractor so poor comparison truck to be playing with.
One things for sure, you don't want to mix F450 and pickup TECA's.Poor results. If you have or can get a pickup unit(n/a or turbo spec),do so asap.
