Actual torque value on final step of tightening tty head bolts?
Alright guys, stupid question.
For years, i have followed the ford procedure for tightening the tty head bolts. I have never had an issue while tightening the head bolts except for the fact that sometimes, with my foot pound torque wrench, it can be a complete pain in the butt to make sure that i get the exact angle of rotation that the last steps require. Alot of the time, the engine is still in the truck when i am installing the heads and theres not much room to move my almost 3 foot long torque wrench around so my question is......
does anyone know the actual torque numbers of the last 2 steps of the tightening process as opposed to tighten this many degrees, then, tighten this many degrees. I have wondered this for years but have never gotten a difinitive answer.

The only way to know is to correctly tighten the bolts using the TTY method and then use a beam type torque wrench to measure how much it take to move a bolt. If you're having that much trouble due to space restrictions then use a White Oil-Based Sharpie Paint Marker to place a dot on one side of the head. Use that dot as a mark for your degrees turned. I find these markers to be invaluable for marking things in automotive work because the paint sticks to dirty and oily surfaces.

Torque has many components that can affect the values and create inconsistent clamping. TTY bolt stretching yeilds the bolt plastically creating very consistent clamping that could never be achieved just using torque. Since the bolts are permanently deformed during TTY angle torquing, the bolts aren't supposed to be reused, but there are people that do reuse TTY bolts without issue. Though it's not a Ford engine, it's GM LS engines, Sloppy Mechanics on you tube is one of these guys that reuses bolts, and he torques them to 75 ft*lb. He has a fancy torque + angle wrench that helped him figure it out. have no idea if the bolts are the same diameter, material, or thread as Modular engine so use your best judgement. Also lubrication has a huge affect on torque values so be sure to use the proper lubrication.
