Hi All,
It has been determined that the knocking noise coming from my engine is the compressor pulley. You can see it rattling in time with the noise.
Is this a pulley or clutch assembly replacement or is it more internal and needs to have the whole compressor replaced? Everything still works, just noisy.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Yes toy can just replace the pulley clutch assembly. You would need a A/C pulley puller which screws inside the clutch once you remove the nut, auto zone should lend it to ya, just watch for the shim behind it all as that will be needed to reinstall the new one. dont over press the new one on as everyone does, just install so it sits flush on the compressor. The bearing always fails in them. Good Luck

Thanks David7.3!
So the failed bearing is actually in the clutch assembly and not the compressor unit. That's good to know and seems like a much cheaper fix.
Thanks also for the shim tip.
Check carefully to see if it's the clutch plate or the pulley.
Hadn't put my hands on it yet but visibly, it was the pulley that was wavering. So in that case, you think the clutch could still be ok and all I need to do is secure the pulley?
I'll wait till it's a little warmer before I slip underneath.
Thanks for the hit!
If you replace things, you should replace the pulley & clutch assembly altogether. I think they come that way, pulley, bearing, and the clutch. Pulley and bearing mount to the front of the compressor body, center(clutch) is attached to the crankshaft of the compressor. If the center wobbles, check the compressor. If the pulley wobbles or screeches, check the bearing and pulley.
It may be possible to replace w/o evacuation and re-charge, though the shop manual would be more definitive.

The clutch plate, pulley assembly, and the coil are probably all available separately (they used to be) or as a three-piece kit. I've had to replace more than one clutch plate by itself and both the plate and the pulley as a pair on several of my Fords over the years. It all depends on what has failed and how much damage there is.
