looking at buying an escape and getting away from the ranger. found a used 2005 with 150K on it. 2.3 4 cyl auto fwd. seems clean and looks good in pics. haven't gone to look at it yet. not familiar with escapes very well so what kinds of things on this model and year in particular should I pay attention to. or what are common repairs or prone failures? had a buddy tell me the rear strut towers rust out, often have trans issues, oil leakers, and some go 100K, others go 200K before spitting an engine.
On my Escape 2005:
- had to scrape to metal and reline entirely both rear wheel wells with fiberglass. Not just the shock absorber tower. In spite of low mileage, the sheetmetal was so thin and there were holes everywhere. Even around the gas filler area.
- rear diff seals leakage
- exhaust hangers ruined by rust.
- cracked brake hoses
- yearly cleaning of pads, caliper pins and housing, and grinding the rotor edges.
- serious corrosion issue with the front subframe. Have it checked. It may corrode and break where the control arms are attached.
- ABS tone rings
- engine gasket leaks (all of them...)
Good luck!
