Symptom: No cooling. Rapid (short-)cycling of compressor clutch. Problem: Compressor is turning on and off rapidly. Solution: System is low on refrigerant charge. Your system has leaked and lost refrigerant. It needs to be evacuated, repaired, and then properly recharged to proper level.
Had the above happen (I think) near the end of the summer (4months ago) and did nothing. Now the clutch or compressor is making a loud noise and smells like a skunk. Should I bother to replace the clutch first or just get a pro to look at it?
Thank you in advance,
Jeff
Ok after some more reading I tried to move the compressor by hand grabbing in front of the belts. No movement so I removed the clutch plate (front piece), and there is still noise. I was hoping that removing the clutch would take the compressor out of the equation.
does this indicate another belt problem? Or still the compressor?
PEOPLE Remember this, the oil in the AC system is circulated with the freon. The oil also ESCAPES with the freon,, so when you run the system low and ignore it,, its the same as ignoring a bouncing engine oil pressure gauge.... NOT a good idea for long life.
