I am finally replacing my bed which has been literally flapping in the breeze. The cross members have been gone for over a year and the wheel wells were all eaten up from plowing and salting. I bought a damaged bed from a guy on craigslist, it had zero rust, and gave it to my body and fender guy and he has it looking really good. I am excited about having a decent bed again, but while the bed is off, is there anything I need to do that would be easier because it's off? Hutch and Harpoon with Racor PS120 already are done.
Take a look at your brake lines and replace any that look like their getting bad, shock absorbers are pretty accessible at that point and anything else you see that looks like it's in need. One thing that I see on both of my trucks is that parking brake line on the driver's side rubs on the frame back by the axle. I wouldn't hurt to replace it if it's bad or protect it with an outer layer while you can easily get at it. How did you like getting your old bed bolts out?
Do you have or plan to use a 7 pin trailer plug in the bed? If so, you could wire everything up and then punch a hole in the side of the bed after installing the bed.
Check wire connections, grounds and ties.
Check condition of rear axle vent and replace as needed.
Check tightness of the clamps you installed on the fuel sending unit (outside the tank).
Walk around the bare frame and just look for items to inspect, clean or tighten.
repair/replace anything that would be difficult with the bed on, thats what I would be doing if I ever take my bed off....which I may need to start thinking of doing.....rust, how cancerous...
Good suggestions all. I should have planned better. That 7 pin connector is a really good idea. I may go 5th wheel in the near future and it would be way easy right now. Emergency brake...ha, whjat's that? I think my hitch is pretty good, I'll have to take a look once it's off. The bed bolts may or may not be a cinch but I am not doing it and I am certain the "hot wrench" is going to be used, my body guy is so it's super easy on me .
Just curious, What has been the problem with the lock?
Getting all crudded up so the key does not work any more, or the far more popular loss of the key. Unlike on a GM vehicle, it isn't the vehicle ignition key. The spare tire key is different.
