Hello all,
I have a 2000 F250 SD, the rails that are spot welded to the underside of the bed have deteriated beyond saving. I have had no luck in finding replacements and was wondering if anyone out there has. I presently have the bed off the truck and am going to scale the rust off the frame and Por-15 it while its open also. Thinking of replacing the tank with with a Titan to double the capacity, any good or bad thoughts on this?
Thank you all for you input in advance.
The bracing could be replaced with square or rectangular tubing of the same height, but why bother when new take off beds are usually available in perfect condition?
I am not replacing the entire bed because my has the liner sprayed in the bed and about 18" around the lower outside. It would cost about $1500 to replace that. I am figuring that fixing the rails will be the less costly alternative. I like your idea about using square tubing, my only concern is that the original rails are not the same height all the way across. They "conture" , but not even sure if this is needed. I will look more into that.
Tubing of the correct height dimension for each location is the solution.
Years ago I retrofit a new take off superduty bed on a much older truck. By dropping the bed on the frame rails , I used different sizes of square tubing to adapt the two. I even welded nuts into the square tubing to use the factory bed bolts to hold the tubing in place, and then tac welded the tubing to the frame. Then I removed the bed and did additional welding between the tubing and frame. There were no modifications done to the bed and everything was bolt on using the adapters I made. Ended up using the truck for several years as the shop beater until I needed the bed for a cheap sd I bought , so I then swapped beds and put the beater bed on the old truck and sold it. It ended up as a truck cruising around picking up scrap metal.
I find that 90% of the beds that I see in junk yards are USELESS. It shouldnt be too hard to find some used rails that way.... Too bad you didnt post this a few months ago, I scrapped a bed a while back.
Yeah, I wish I found it earlier myself Sweets, found it by accident while under there checking the brakes. On further research, I am going to replace the brake lines because they look like they are going to turn to dust from the rust, better now then when I need them.
Here's the link to the site for Ed. However, he had a sudden illness and isn't currently back to work. Not to worry though because they still take orders and will work with you well.
