Ford used the lightest gauge cables they thought they could get away with, and also ran them to the firewall and then back to the block. (instead of say, direct to a starter bolt) When everything is new and shiny it works ok, but very problematic as rust and corrosion sets in.
I would recommend 1/0 aka " one ought" AWG pure copper stranded cable with tin coated copper terminals. Yes it's overkill. The generic replacement battery cables in the blister packs are absolute crap. Go to a tractor supply store, or maybe a welding shop. They will make you a "custom" set that won't cost much more than the el-cheapo versions hanging on the shelf.
