Just bought 1984 F-250 a few days ago and my starter went out(signal wire shorted to the ground from solenoid to main body of starter) so I went to replace it. In the process saw the person who owned it before me had broken the main power wire and "fixed" it by putting a battery terminal to the broken lead and running a jumper to the starter. His wire also went from a 2/0 down to a 4 gauge.
Long story short, decided to rebuild the wiring after replacing starter. I don't know if the previous owner had replaced the wire, he said he added in a second battery at some point. Wiring I took off looks like 2/0 gauge which I couldn't find in any of the auto stores in town here and napa lists a 4 gauge for the starter wire from the battery.
Which size is the wire supposed to be from factory? I bought 10 feet of clear 2 gauge wire from Advance Auto Parts; is this a big enough gauge?
The best thing to do is look on the shelf at advance auto and get their universal battery cables. They have black ones and red ones, and they already have the battery ends made onto them and the lugs on the other end.
With the wire you have you are going to have to buy those universal ends and install them, and they always seem to corrode after awhile and make a poor connection.
2/0 is huge and way overkill. #2 should be fine, although if it is a diesel I'd go with #1.
I prefer high strand count wire as it's more flexible and easier to route. Anchor brand marine cable is a good choice, high strand count, each strand is individually tinned.
I make my own cables (and for others) as shown in this post. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post14647848 and post #10.
Ah, just saw you've already bought some from AA. Oh well.
