80'S 7.3

Not being a Ford person I'm looking for a little info. I have a 1976 Ford F350 with a small dump body on it. It has a 390 that is locked up. I was "told" that the 7.3 shares the same bellhousing pattern as the 390. I do have access to a running 7.3 and was wondering if it would bolt up to the existing trans. Just exploring my options..... the older gas engines are getting older to come across.
Thanks
Joe

the diesel engine has it's own bellhousing bolt pattern that is different from all the other ford engines.
so to put that 7.3 in your truck, you would also need a diesel 4 speed bellhousing and clutch assembly,.

Yep, different bellhousing patterns. Otherwise I might have tried to stuff an IDI in my Thunderbird...
You'll need a bellhousing or zf5 if the truck is a manual, or a C6 or E4OD with the correct pattern if an auto.

I have the engine and 5 speed trans outta the super duty... would have to make a trans crossmember, figure out the fuel system and the front engine mounts.

that would be the easy way to do it. motor mounts and cross member will not be that hard.
neither will fuel, just need a return line back to the tank from the engine.

The awesome thing about IDIs is how easy it is to get them running - just need fuel supply(and return to somewhere) at 0-10 psi, and a wire for the fuel shutoff solenoid. (plus some minor wiring for the Glow plugs)
On a 7.3, it's even easier - at least with the later-model 7.3s, you can literally just power up the glow plug controller(heavy wire to B+, smaller red terminal to key switched power) and *everything* works right. Glow plugs, fuel shutoff, high idle, light-load advance... all done with just the wiring harness on the engine and nothing needed(of course, actually using the switched power wire in the harness is best for a permanent install, but the simplicity is amazing).
